Ditch, erect rosettes from horizontal rhizomes ca 10 cm thick, leaves metallic purple, especially below, petioles spongy, ca 1.5 m long on largest leaves, largest blades ca 4 dm long, peduncles erect, spongy, floxering spathe white with purple mottling, especially abaxially, at first cupped aroud upper spadix, later reflexed, fruiting peduncle and remaining spathe deep purple, flowering spadix white below, cream-white above, developing fruits dull white, milky sap present at least in inflorescence.
